Anyone who lives in Torquay will tell you how popular our little seaside town is during the Summer. In the warmer months, the town centre and harbourside become bustling and full of visitors from many different places. Although Torquay is commonly known as a place that people from across the UK go on holiday, Below Decks found out through our survey that some people travel to the English Riviera from further afield.

Our Survey

The survey wasn’t too difficult to put together – because our restaurant was busy all Summer, all we did was ask a proportion of our customers where they were from and filled in a little sheet with the answers. The results show that although we had a lot of customers who were on holiday, we’re also popular with the locals. Predictably, Torquay was the most popular location in the survey, with many customers also from Paignton, Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Exeter and surrounding towns and villages.

More customers from Birmingham than anywhere else

Out of all the customers we asked who weren’t from local areas, it appears that Torquay is a popular holiday spot for people from Birmingham. In total, out of all the people we surveyed, 29 of them were from Birmingham. It makes sense that Torquay is a popular location for people from the Midlands because of the relative close proximity.

The survey showed a wide variety of visitors from pretty much all areas of the UK. We had a few visitors from Belfast in Northern Ireland as well as Dublin and Cork in the Republic of Ireland. There were a number of people from Wales who ate here, with some from Swansea and some from Cardiff, along with some people just saying they were from Wales with no specifics to where.

We were popular among Scottish holiday makers, with a number of customers hailing from Edinburgh.

Tourists from the North West have always liked visiting Torquay, and this Summer showed that they still do. We were host to people from all across Lancashire, Yorkshire and Merseyside. A few Londoners and some people from Newcastle and Sunderland show that Torquay is still one of the UK’s most popular resorts for a Summer break.

European Visitors

As well as being a top holiday destination for locals, Torquay’s also popular among foreign students wishing to learn English. The Summer brought us regular visits from customers all across Europe, including Valencia (Spain), Carcassonne (France), Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Italy. There were also visitors from further east, including Georgia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Further afield

As great as Torquay is, it’s hard to imagine many people from the other side of the world will know about it. But our survey showed that we attract visitors from all over the world. Although the vast majority of our customers were from the UK and Europe, we served a number of people from different continents.

Our survey contained visitors from Australia, USA (Texas to be precise), Russia, Brazil and even North Korea. Hopefully they all share the news about how amazing Torquay is to visit.

Although the main holiday season is over, we’re hoping to meet more people from around the world in our restaurant.
